In his tragically short life, GiovanBattista Pergolesi wrote intensely for the theatre and the church. The Stabat Mater is definitely a master work, scored in simplicity for Soprano, Mezzosoprano and strings. Every number, Aria or Duet, displays a deep religious intensity and passion, combined with the finest Italian late baroque taste for melodic invention.
