Giacomo Puccini – Tosca | Opera

On 27, 29, and 30 November, Tosca by Puccini will be presented in another new production by the Teatro Comunale di Modena in co-production with the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, this time in a staging curated by Luca Orsini, which premiered in November 2024 for the Tuscan circuit (Lucca, Livorno, and Pisa) and for the Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna on the occasion of the centenary of the composer’s death.

“In the celebrations for the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death,” declares the director, “staging Tosca, one of his masterpieces, perhaps his most dramatic, is both an honor and a duty, also because of the contemporary reflections this opera continues to provoke 123 years after its premiere in Rome. The protagonist of this opera is dedicated to all women who struggle in life with courage and serves as a luminous symbol at the beginning of the 20th century. Her final act, though tragic, represents a courageous gesture of a strong woman who escapes violence and asserts her freedom. Tosca also has the city of Rome as a protagonist, with the bells of its churches marking Puccini’s score. This is a dark, decadent Rome, which the sets by Giacomo Andrico, together with costumes by Rosanna Monti, depict in chiaroscuro, like ruins painted in a Spanish painting.” The musical direction of the production is entrusted to Stefano Ranzani, one of the most acclaimed conductors on the international scene, particularly in the operatic repertoire, with successes ranging from Teatro alla Scala to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, from the Opéra National de Paris to the Staatsoper in Berlin.
