CARAVAGGIO: Lights and Shadows of the Accursed Painter, by Mirko Baldassarre

Caravaggio, by Mirko Baldassarre
Caravaggio, by Mirko Baldassarre, is an engaging and fascinating show that takes the viewer on a journey to discover Michelangelo Merisi. An artist worthy of capital letters for the exceptionality of his persona. Watching the theatrical performance, both the dark and the brilliantly talented sides of the artist are explored. The lights and shadows of the accursed painter chase each other through Baldassarre's skillful narration, which starts with two words: revelation and revolution—two extraordinary forces intertwined in the description of Caravaggio. Mirko Baldassarre illustrates how Caravaggio's art was, and still is, both a revelation and a revolution. His arrival in Rome from Milan at just twenty-one years old showed the world an entirely new way of painting.

It was a mode characterized by powerful realism, revolutionary for the time, and still original today. Caravaggio's very short life burned intensely in just 39 years, as powerful as his restless spirit, capable of immense work with brushes and canvas. Throughout his journey, he went from prestigious commissions to dramatic rejections, from living in aristocratic palaces to breathing in sordid inns. Restlessness, irregularity, dramas, and dark hues transformed the existence of a man who alternated between appointments with the great history of art and brawls, arrests, charges, and even the murder of a man (perhaps two).

The show led by Mirko Baldassarre takes us into the allure of this life, dramatically beyond others, in an intense journey filled with fascinating descriptions, magnificent music, and a selection of images that mix some of Caravaggio’s absolute masterpieces with scenes from the present. A stunning and original fusion. Thus, the works alternate and are explained through key episodes from the painter's dramatic life. The audience's experience becomes complete and vivid, just like one of Caravaggio's signed works.
