"Somewhere between folk and pop, with a bit of classical and jazz," Vienna Teng herself places her music. "It's a bit frustrating not to be able to offer a catchier description. But at the same time, it probably shows that I'm doing something right." Very right, indeed. Since the "Asian-American Californian" quit her job as a programmer at Cisco Systems in 2002 to fully dedicate herself to her music, the "child of Chopin and Sarah McLachlan" (San Jose Mercury News) has successfully brought her "gentle and sophisticated soprano" (Washington Post), her "clever and introspective lyrics" (Philadelphia Daily News), and her "intricate piano arrangements" (Entertainment Weekly) to her compatriots – in TV hits like the "Letterman Show" and on tour with colleagues like Madeleine Peyroux, Shawn Colvin, Duncan Sheik, Joan Baez, and the Indigo Girls.

With her album "Warm Strangers" in the early 2000s, Vienna Teng celebrated her breakthrough, bringing her into three Billboard charts and ranking No. 2 on Amazon's bestseller list. She appeared on the legendary David Letterman Show and was a support act for Joan Baez, Marc Cohen, Indigo Girls, and Shawn Colvin. Tours took her not only through the USA but also thrilled European audiences at her numerous concerts. Sometimes she performs with strings, sometimes with the congenial multi-instrumentalist Alex Wong.

And all of this despite the fact that the Asian-American Californian actually had a secure job with one of the big names in the Silicon Valley IT industry. This is only logical, as she studied and graduated in Computer Science at the highly prestigious Stanford University. However, her childhood and youth dream was always music. Even at five, she was playing the piano and composing at the age of six. She remained a self-taught musician and even gave herself an artist name as a child: "When I played a few rock songs and made the childish decision to become a star one day, I really wanted to have an artist name as well. That's how I came up with Vienna Teng, as a homage to the city of Vienna, which I imagined to be the fairy tale home of Mozart and Beethoven."
