As Chief Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, Petr Popelka takes his place in a long line of outstanding musicians who have led the tradition-steeped orchestra. His path to the conductor’s podium has not been a direct one, but it has followed its own logic: as deputy solo double-bassist in the Staatskapelle Dresden from 2010 to 2019, he was in an ideal position to learn from the best about his future trade. His wish to conduct, however, really originates from his years as a composition student. World-class musician and composer: an ideal combination. Popelka, born in 1986 in Prague, joins the Czech Philharmonic to introduce himself with music by Antonín Dvořák. They play the great B minor Cello Concerto, congenially performed by Gautier Capuçon, one of the outstanding cellists of our time, and the abundantly melodic Sixth Symphony.
