On Friday, 20 and Sunday, 22 February, a new production of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s I quatro rusteghi will be presented outside the subscription series, featuring young talents from the advanced training course of the Teatro Comunale di Modena, a national excellence that for ten years has successfully supported singers of various nationalities at a decisive stage of their professional development. Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, active in the first half of the twentieth century, drew inspiration from Mozart and Rossini for lightness and elegance, but also from Verdi’s maturity for the taste of theatrical characterization. I quatro rusteghi (1906) is one of his most successful works, based on a comedy by Carlo Goldoni, with whom he had a fruitful artistic collaboration. In this comic opera in Venetian dialect, Wolf-Ferrari celebrates the eighteenth century as an ideal of balance and refinement, translating the liveliness of the dialogues and the freshness of the characters into music. The production will be conducted by Giuseppe Grazioli with staging by Aldo Tarabella.
