Jonas Kaufmann & Helmut Deutsch – Songs in the Park
An extraordinary program at the Wiener Theater im Park: classical songs, operetta favorites, and Viennese delights, performed by two artists who have been celebrated worldwide for many years as ambassadors of song, most recently with an exceptional staged presentation of Schubert’s Winterreise in New York.
Jonas Kaufmann has always had a soft spot for Viennese culture: through his grandparents in Tyrol, he was often more exposed to Austrian television than German. This also sparked his love for Viennese music, from Johann Strauss to Hermann Leopoldi, and his admiration for the artistry of Hans Moser or Peter Alexander. The genre of Wienerlied fascinates him in particular because of its incredible diversity, practically a “sounding cultural history of Vienna.”
Incidentally, Helmut Deutsch was the first person with whom he worked on the Viennese idiom. That was 30 years ago, and by now the “Wiener Schmäh” has become second nature to him. Even for “true” Viennese, it is astonishing how the Munich-born Jonas Kaufmann masters the Viennese dialect; his performances of Ich muss einmal wieder in Grinzing sein, I bin a stiller Zecher, and In einem kleinen Café in Hernals were met with standing ovations from the audience at the Theater im Park. We very much look forward to hearing and seeing him again on July 9, 2026!
