A late debut? There is no «late» in Martha Argerich’s life, she seems timeless, playing in her 80s with the fire that she has magically been able to maintain throughout her life. This connects her with Rudolf Buchbinder, whom she has known since their joint student years in Vienna. While they were fortunate enough to have nothing but admiration for each other as lifelong friends, the young Johannes Brahms was plagued by «the shadow of Beethoven». Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in B flat major combines wit, rebelliousness and lyrical moments. By the time of his both wonderfully palatable and melancholy Symphony in E minor, Brahms had long since overcome this almost crippling admiration from his early years.
French composer Louise Farrenc was by no means overshadowed by her male colleagues. Her works were published and performed, including the second of her overtures for orchestra, with which the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal conductor Lahav Shani will open the concert evening: a thrilling work by a self-confident, successful woman whose music is once again being heard more frequently in concert halls around the world today.
