Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra, Johannes Wildner
Vienna New Year’s Concert

The unique Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra has continued the artistic legacy of the legendary Vienna Strauss Orchestra since 1966, after it was dissolved in New York in 1901 by Eduard Strauss I.

Eduard Strauss II, the grandson and last professional musician of the Strauss dynasty, revived the idea of the family orchestra with the founding of the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. Since then, the orchestra has performed all over the world, presenting the works of the Strauss dynasty, above all the festive melodies of their artistic forebears, the two Waltz Kings, Johann Strauss Senior and Johann Strauss Junior.

It is a great honor to be allowed to perform in this tradition-rich orchestra. The musicians of the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra are members of Austria’s leading top orchestras, such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Lower Austria Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra will be conducted by former Vienna Philharmonic member Johannes Wildner, who is regarded as one of Austria’s most important conductors and, in addition to the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra, collaborates with renowned ensembles such as the Arena di Verona, the Prague State Opera, the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic.

The program of this Vienna New Year’s Concert at the Hercules Hall in Munich features the spirited melodies of the Strauss dynasty, including the Viennese waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss Junior. Around 200 years after the Viennese waltz spread from the music city of Vienna into the wider world as a central part of cultural life, it was recognized in 2017 as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Munich Residence

The Munich Residence served as the seat of government and residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. What began in 1385 as a castle in the north-eastern corner of the city (the Neuveste, or new citadel), was transformed by the rulers over the centuries into a magnificent palace, its buildings and gardens extending further and further into the town.

The rooms and art collections spanning a period that begins with the Renaissance, and extends via the early Baroque and Rococo epochs to Neoclassicism, bear witness to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
