The National Theater of São Carlos was inaugurated on June 30, 1793 and is still the only national theater dedicated to the production and presentation of opera and choral and symphonic music.

Historical facts, social episodes and relevant cultural events have been plentiful throughout its life, enriching its unique historical heritage, housed in a building of neoclassical and Italian-inspired 18th-century property classified as a building of public interest in 1928 ( September 8, 1928) and National Monument in 1996 (March 6, 1996).

The resident artistic groups are the São Carlos National Theater Choir, created in 1943, which interprets the great operatic and choral symphonic repertoire, remaining as the only professional choir structure in Portugal; and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, whose origin dates back to 1993.

The Theater has a regular musical program in three venues: in the Great Hall, the venue for major lyrical productions and symphonic and choral-symphonic concerts, as well as ballets. The Noble Room, which allows access to the facade balcony, hosts recitals and concerts of different instrumental formations, opera readings and more intimate performances. And also, the Foyer - entrance of the Theater -, a privileged space for chamber concerts and short recitals of free admission, which invite informal contact.
