Giuseppe Verdi – Stiffelio | Opera
Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave
Regarding the revival of less frequently performed works from Verdi’s catalogue, after Giovanna D’Arco, presented in 2021, and Aroldo, in co-production with the Teatro di Rimini last season, this year will feature Giuseppe Verdi’s Stiffelio (also in co-production with I Teatri di Reggio Emilia), a work marking the transition between the composer’s early operas and his mature bourgeois dramas, increasingly popular and appreciated among his lesser-known works. The theme of adultery and forgiveness, which forced Verdi to revise the opera under censorship at the time of its composition, lies at the heart of a libretto that has consistently inspired innovative and compelling productions, in this case entrusted to one of the greatest masters of opera theatre, Pier Luigi Pizzi. Stiffelio will be conducted by the acclaimed Leonardo Sini and will feature a debut in a new Verdi role for tenor Gregory Kunde, crowning a distinguished career encompassing an extraordinary breadth of repertoire. Joining them, for the first time in Modena, are soprano Lidia Fridman and baritone Vladimir Stoyanov, a leading figure in the Verdi repertoire.
