The universe and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach –
connecting the wonder of these two worlds is the aim of Bach in Space: impressive images of the cosmos projected on a giant screen are combined with the music of the universal genius, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in a truly unique experience. NASA recordings of planets, galaxies, and our Earth are shown on the big screen while Mona Asuka performs a hand-picked selection of Bach’s works on the piano.
The German-Japanese pianist, who performs worldwide with numerous renowned orchestras, combines her musical insight with extra-musical inspiration. Her performance of Bach’s works, together with the simultaneous view into the vastness of the universe, will fill the audience with wonder. From the project’s first performances in Munich, both audience and press were enthusiastic: “The people of Munich were visibly captivated during the performance – by the vastness and depth of the crystal-clear, high-resolution images, by the finely curated selection of Bach’s repertoire, by the precise realization” (Kultur in München).

Fascinating images of the universe on a giant screen accompanied by the music of Bach
Distant galaxies, nebulae, black holes – the universe closer than ever before! On a huge screen, razor-sharp NASA images shine in colors usually seen only in science fiction films. At the same time, Mona Asuka, one of the outstanding pianists of her generation, performs live the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – sometimes powerful, sometimes delicate, always full of surprises.
The result: a concert that feels like a journey through space and time.
Excerpts from works by Johann Sebastian Bach, including The Well-Tempered Clavier, Goldberg Variations, French Suite No. 5 in G major, and Italian Concerto in F major, accompanied by projections of breathtaking images of the universe.
