Synopsis/Details

Gustav Holst’s The Planets is one of the most recognizable orchestral works of the early 20th century. Composed between 1914 and 1916, the seven-movement orchestral suite explores different moods and characters associated with the planets of the solar system. Each movement creates a distinctive musical atmosphere, from the powerful and energetic “Mars” to the mysterious and dreamlike “Neptune.” Holst combines rich orchestration, dramatic rhythms, memorable melodies, and imaginative harmonies to create a work of remarkable variety and expressive power. Although inspired by astrology rather than astronomy, The Planets has become a lasting landmark of orchestral repertoire. Its spectacular sound and dramatic contrasts continue to captivate audiences in concert halls around the world, offering an immersive musical journey through Holst’s extraordinary imagination.
